The Associated Press reported on August 21 (local time), citing the State Department, that the Donald Trump administration is reviewing whether all U.S. visa holders-over 55 million people-have any violations that could warrant visa cancellation or deportation.
In response to AP's inquiry, the State Department stated that all U.S. visa holders, including tourists, are subject to ongoing review, and that if someone is found to be ineligible, their visa may be canceled or they may be deported.
Regarding the grounds for visa cancellation, the State Department mentioned overstaying the authorized period, criminal activity, threats to public safety, involvement in terrorist activities, and supporting terrorist organizations.
The State Department explained, "As part of our investigations, we review all available information, including law enforcement or immigration records and any factors of visa ineligibility that come to light after a visa is issued."
Previously, in June, the State Department announced that it would review the social media posts of foreign nationals applying for student visas before deciding whether to issue the visa.
The Trump administration has deported not only undocumented immigrants in the United States but also holders of student or exchange visitor visas. According to these guidelines, even those who have already received approval to stay may suddenly have their status revoked, AP pointed out. If an issue is discovered during the ongoing verification process, entry to the United States may be denied, or if the person is already in the country, they may be deported.
