On-site Video Commentary Service
for the Visually Impaired at Taereung
Experience History Through Touch and Detailed Descriptions
The Royal Palaces and Tombs Center of the National Heritage Administration announced on August 21 that, in cooperation with the Seoul Tourism Organization, it will operate an on-site video commentary service at Taereung in Seoul from next month until December 5.
The on-site video commentary is a program designed for the visually impaired. It provides detailed information about the appearance, direction, and distance of objects as if watching a video, and utilizes various senses, such as touch, to enhance the explanations. Last year, a total of 80 sessions were held at Gyeongbokgung Palace, Changdeokgung Palace, Deoksugung Palace, Changgyeonggung Palace, and Jongmyo Shrine.
The service at Taereung will last about three hours. Participants will hear about the background of Queen Munjeong, the third queen consort of King Jungjong of the Joseon Dynasty, and, together with a professional guide, will be able to touch stone animal models such as seokho and seokyang.
Reservations must be made by phone prior to use, and each visually impaired participant must be accompanied by one assistant, such as a family member or acquaintance, at the site.
