Stole 12 Gold Bars and 243 Million Won
Court Sentences Defendant to 2 Years in Prison
A man in his 20s who broke into his friend's house three times and stole valuables worth hundreds of millions of won after hearing that his friend's parents kept cash at home has been sentenced to prison.
According to a report by Yonhap News on August 20, Presiding Judge Kim Jiyeong of the Daejeon District Court Criminal Division 6 sentenced Mr. A (21), who was indicted on charges of theft and housebreaking, to two years in prison.
Mr. A was put on trial for sneaking into the home of his friend, Mr. B's parents, in Seo-gu, Daejeon, on three separate occasions between July 2021 and December 2022 and stealing valuables. Mr. A is known to have stolen a total of 243 million won in cash, including 80 million won that B's parents had stored in a travel bag, as well as 12 pure gold bars weighing 100 grams each, with the total value of the stolen items reaching approximately 300 million won.
During the police investigation, it was revealed that Mr. A did not ignore Mr. B's comment that "my parents keep cash and other valuables at home" and used a password he already knew to break into Mr. B's house. The investigation found that he committed the crime to purchase a car and luxury clothing.
Mr. A was also charged with housebreaking for entering another friend's home using the same method while on leave during his military service in February last year.
Judge Kim explained the sentencing by stating, "The defendant broke into his friend's house multiple times and stole a large sum of money. Considering the circumstances and course of the crime, including the fact that he did not properly return the stolen amount but instead returned luxury clothing purchased with the stolen money, the level of blame is significant. The damages amount to 300 million won, and the victim is petitioning for a severe punishment, which was taken into account."
