On August 20, the Noeun Wholesale Market in Daejeon was finally selected as a candidate project for the preliminary feasibility study (pre-feasibility study) by the Ministry of Economy and Finance, paving the way for its transformation into a next-generation wholesale market through the improvement of outdated facilities and innovation of logistics flow.

With this selection, the project can now be fully implemented with national funding support, and is expected to proceed at a faster pace.

Since its opening in 2001, the Noeun Wholesale Market has accumulated structural problems over 24 years, including aging facilities, complicated logistics flow, and vulnerabilities in safety management. To address these issues, Daejeon City applied for the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs’ Public Wholesale Market Facility Modernization Project in June 2024, was finally selected in December of the same year, and has now passed the first hurdle with the confirmation as a pre-feasibility study candidate project.

The facility modernization project will invest a total of KRW 345.2 billion (KRW 103.6 billion in national funds, KRW 103.5 billion in city funds, and KRW 138.1 billion in loans) to redevelop the existing site in Noeun-dong, Yuseong-gu (land area: 112,282㎡), with a total floor area of 74,967㎡. A phased demolition and reconstruction approach will be used to minimize business disruption, applying a cyclical redevelopment method.

The main directions for improvement include: ▲separating the entry and exit of agricultural products and establishing a one-way logistics flow; ▲newly constructing auction halls and intermediary wholesaler shops by function; ▲introducing merchandising and fulfillment functions that enable sorting, subdividing, packaging, and delivery in a one-stop process; and ▲improving logistics efficiency through the establishment of a joint delivery area.

Lee Jangwoo, Mayor of Daejeon, said, "With the selection as a pre-feasibility study candidate project, the facility modernization project for Noeun Wholesale Market has gained significant momentum. We will respond thoroughly to the pre-feasibility study to secure final approval, and transform the market into a next-generation public wholesale market that satisfies producers, distributors, and consumers alike."
