The Office of the Speaker announced to reporters after Speaker Woo held a private meeting with Dai Bing, Ambassador of China to Korea, in his office at the National Assembly on the 20th, stating, "Speaker Woo has received an official invitation from the Chinese government to attend the Victory Day event in China on September 3."
The office added, "We will provide an update as soon as a final decision is made regarding attendance."
China is planning to hold a grand 80th anniversary Victory Day event in Tiananmen Square, Beijing, which will include a military parade, and has invited numerous foreign leaders.
Although it was reported that the Chinese side had inquired about President Lee's attendance, it appears that Speaker Woo, who is second in the national order of protocol, will visit China instead of the President.
Lawmakers from both the ruling and opposition parties who are members of the Korea-China Parliamentary Friendship Association are also expected to visit China together.
Kim Taenyun, a lawmaker from the Democratic Party and the president of the association, Park Jung, a Democratic Party lawmaker and vice president, and Kim Sungwon, a lawmaker from the People Power Party, are among those likely to accompany the delegation.
