Pohang City Aims to Become Global Low-Carbon Steel Hub... Hosts Global Low-Carbon Steel Workshop

Pohang City, UNIDO, and the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy Co-host the 'Global Low-Carbon Steel Workshop'
Sharing Low-Carbon Steel Strategies and Innovative Technologies
Over 100 Experts from 35 Countries Gather in One Place

Pohang City, in collaboration with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, will co-host the 'Global Low-Carbon Steel Workshop' at the POSCO International Center from August 27 to 29.

This workshop will bring together more than 100 government, business, and expert representatives from 35 countries around the world, providing a platform for international cooperation to discuss low-carbon steel strategies, innovative technologies, and policy directions.

The main agenda items include ▲ low-carbon process technologies ▲ steel decarbonization policies ▲ financial support systems for decarbonization. The workshop is expected to serve both as a venue for international cooperation in response to the climate crisis and as a starting point for accelerating the green transition of the steel industry.

Pohang City has set a goal to become a 'leading carbon-neutral city' through this event, leveraging Korea's representative steelworks and international port. In particular, the city plans to accelerate the establishment of a sustainable industrial ecosystem and green transition by linking local specialized industries such as steel, secondary batteries, and hydrogen.

On August 27, the UNIDO delegation, government officials from various countries, and global steel industry stakeholders will visit key POSCO sites. Participants will directly observe Pohang's industrial competitiveness and eco-friendly innovation efforts, which are expected to lay the groundwork for expanding future international technological cooperation and partnerships.

This year, the city has continued to strengthen its position as a hub for international conferences by hosting events such as the World Green Growth Forum (WGGF) and the UN Global Innovation Hub Workshop. There are growing expectations that this workshop will help Pohang emerge as a forward base for global climate governance.

A Pohang City official stated, "This event will serve as an important milestone in enhancing Pohang's international status and accelerating the realization of carbon neutrality," adding, "We will continue to strengthen international cooperation and innovation networks to lead the region's green growth."

A UNIDO representative emphasized, "This workshop will be the first global knowledge-sharing platform in the field of low-carbon steel," adding, "Through Net Zero partnerships and a global matchmaking platform, we are building a global consensus to turn decarbonization into opportunities for growth, innovation, and cooperation, and Pohang will be the starting point for this transformation."
