Cheongyang County in South Chungcheong Province announced on August 20 that it has secured 32.1 billion won in national funds to restore rivers and public facilities damaged by the extreme rainfall in July. This achievement is the result of County Governor Kim Dongon’s proactive response, as he personally led emergency restoration efforts and a comprehensive damage assessment immediately after the disaster.
Immediately after the heavy rains on July 16, the county began emergency restoration work and promptly conducted a thorough damage survey.
During the central joint investigation that began on July 27, the county ensured that not a single case of damage was overlooked, ultimately securing 32.1 billion won-83% of the total 38.5 billion won required for public facility restoration.
Notably, 7 billion won was allocated specifically for river damage, meeting the criteria for designation as a special disaster area.
The newly secured national funds will be allocated to the following projects: 18.9 billion won for the Nongsoso Stream improvement and restoration project in Sanggap-ri, Daechi-myeon; 4.2 billion won for the Yangji Stream functional restoration project in Chugwang-ri, Ungok-myeon; and 9 billion won for restoration work at 83 additional sites.
The county plans to go beyond simple restoration by implementing comprehensive, long-term measures that include flood prevention and environmental maintenance.
Cheongyang County suffered severe damage, including the loss of 832 meters of the Yangjicheon embankment, the collapse of 1,160 meters of the Nongsocheon embankment, partial destruction of homes, and the burial of farmland.
The county is preparing additional improvement and restoration plans and has requested further national funding. The Ministry of the Interior and Safety designated the area as a special disaster zone on August 6, providing up to 74.4% of public facility restoration costs and up to 80% for private facilities through national support.
Governor Kim stated, "Thanks to swift emergency restoration and thorough investigation, we were able to secure 32.1 billion won in national funds. Moving forward, we will pursue permanent restoration improvements to build a disaster-resilient Cheongyang County and do our utmost to help residents return to a safe daily life."
