"Let's Raise Safety Management Standards": Construction Industry Unites for Action

Building a Culture of Safety at Construction Sites
Federation and Industry Leaders Launch Multifaceted Initiatives
Emergency Meetings, Task Force, and Training to Eradicate Serious Accidents

The Korea Federation of Construction Associations announced that on the 18th, it held a meeting chaired by Chairman Han Seunggu (who is also the Chairman of the Korea Construction Association) to discuss the spread of a safety culture at construction sites and the eradication of serious accidents.

The meeting was attended by CEOs of the nation’s top 30 large construction companies, as well as presidents of regional association chapters. The participants revisited the issues raised at the construction company CEO meeting presided over by Minister of Employment and Labor Kim Younghoon on the 13th. They also exchanged opinions on practical safety measures that can be implemented on-site.

This year, a series of accidents at infrastructure sites such as highways and railways, as well as apartment construction sites, have led to casualties, raising public awareness. President Lee Jaemyung instructed officials to consider punitive measures, such as revoking the licenses of construction companies with frequent fatal accidents.

Previously, on the 30th of last month, the presidents of 16 regional associations nationwide held an emergency countermeasure meeting. Chairman Han stated, "The lives and safety of the people take precedence over any other value, and protecting the lives of workers is fundamental for the sustainable development of the construction industry." He pledged to establish and implement a practical, field-oriented safety management system.

On the 5th of this month, the Korea Federation of Construction Associations launched a "Serious Accident Eradication Task Force Team" with the participation of 17 organizations and research institutes. The task force will hold regular meetings to oversee safety measures and will also conduct research projects to analyze the causes of serious accidents. The industry plans to implement a variety of initiatives, such as performances on Construction Day, to address the issue from multiple angles.

On the 14th, 17 member companies of the federation and 16 regional chapters of the Korea Construction Association hung banners with the phrase "Eradicate Serious Accidents" on the exterior walls of the Construction Hall. Since the 13th of this month, special regional safety training sessions have been launched for representatives and employees of association member companies. Chairman Han Seunggu said, "Through multifaceted activities such as emergency countermeasure meetings, task force operations, banner campaigns, and nationwide special training tours, we will dramatically reduce serious accidents at construction sites," adding, "The government, National Assembly, and industry must work together to firmly establish a culture of safety at construction sites."
