Dong-A University Selected for EU 'Horizon Europe' International Joint Research Project

Leading the Development of a Digital Twin-Based Energy Optimization Platform

Dong-A University (President: Lee Haewoo) announced on the 19th that its AI, Digital Twin, and SW Demonstration Center (Director: Ok Sooyeol; Principal Investigator: Professor Lee Seokhwan) has been finally selected for the Clean Energy Transition Partnership (CETPartnership) joint research project under Horizon Europe, the European Union's largest research and innovation program.

This project is part of the "Collaborative Hub-Type Land, Infrastructure and Transport International Cooperation R&D Project" supported by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and the Korea Agency for Infrastructure Technology Advancement. It is considered a rare achievement for a domestic university to be officially selected as the lead institution for a multilateral Horizon Europe project.

Dong-A University will participate as the Korean lead institution in the "EnergyBuilder" project, which is led by the University of Southern Denmark (SDU). In particular, the university will be responsible for the "WP1 (Digitization of Building Lifecycle for Energy Optimization)" work package, developing a digital twin simulation platform to optimize the energy flow throughout building design and operation. This platform is described as the core foundational technology for the entire project, demonstrating Dong-A University's leading technological capabilities.

The "EnergyBuilder" project aims to transform buildings from mere energy consumers into "prosumers" that produce, store, and trade electricity by utilizing AI, digital twin, and virtual power plant (VPP) technologies. Demonstrations will be conducted in the Busan Eco Delta Smart Village as well as in living labs across three European countries.

In addition to Dong-A University, other participants in this research include the Polytechnic University of Turin (PoliTo) in Italy, the Porto Polytechnic Institute of Engineering (ISEP), and Korea Water Resources Corporation (K-water).

Professor Lee Seokhwan stated, "Being selected for the Horizon Europe project is evidence that Dong-A University's AI and digital twin capabilities have been recognized internationally," adding, "It is especially meaningful that we are leading the development of the core foundational technology, the digital twin platform."

Through this project, Dong-A University plans to secure core technologies for energy management, achieve cost reduction, and create SaaS (Software as a Service)-based business models, thereby establishing a foothold for entry into new global markets.
