At around 5:40 a.m. on August 19, an SUV and a 25-ton cargo truck collided near the Jingyo Interchange (IC) on the Namhae Expressway in Jingyo-myeon, Hadong-gun, South Gyeongsang Province.
At the time of the accident, the SUV was traveling toward Busan and skidded on plastic pellets that had spilled onto the road, causing it to crash into the rear of the cargo truck, which was parked on the shoulder.
As a result of the accident, the SUV driver, a man in his 40s identified as Mr. A, was seriously injured and transported to the hospital, but ultimately died.
The plastic pellets were very small in size and had been loaded onto the cargo truck in sacks. The sacks came undone, spilling the pellets directly onto the road.
It was determined that Mr. B, the cargo truck driver in his 50s, had parked his vehicle on the shoulder to clean up the road just before the accident occurred.
There was no traffic congestion caused by the accident, and all of the spilled plastic powder has been cleared away.
The police plan to charge Mr. B with violating regulations regarding securing cargo to prevent spillage and will investigate the exact circumstances of the accident.
