Governor Seo Taewon: "We Will Balance Heritage Preservation and Regional Development"

Construction Regulations Eased Around Three Gyeonggi-do Monuments in Gapyeong County
Maximum Building Height Increased by 3 Meters
Balancing Regional Development and Cultural Heritage Protection Expected

Gapyeong County, Gyeonggi Province (Governor Seo Taewon), announced on August 19 that, following a review by Gyeonggi Province, it has eased the standards for permitting construction activities in the areas surrounding three Gyeonggi-do designated monuments within the county.

This relaxation of construction standards is expected to provide substantial support for the protection of property rights of local residents and contribute to regional development.

The monuments subject to the eased construction standards include a total of 132 plots covering 45,799 square meters in the following areas: Hasaek-ri in Gapyeong-eup (General Lee Bangsil's Tomb), Daebo-ri in Jojong-myeon (Jojongam), and Taebong-ri in Sang-myeon (Lee Junggu Teacher's Tomb and Samse Sin-dobi). With this measure, the maximum building height restriction in these areas has been raised by 3 meters compared to the previous limit (with some areas excluded), significantly increasing the development potential due to regulatory relaxation.

Gapyeong County requested a review by the Gyeonggi-do Heritage Committee in June to address residents' complaints and to balance national heritage protection with regional development. The relevant review was recently finalized and approved.

A county official explained, "This easing of standards is intended to more broadly recognize the property rights of private landowners within cultural heritage preservation areas while also providing administrative convenience. It is significant in that it promotes both regional development and cultural heritage protection."

Seo Taewon, Governor of Gapyeong County, stated, "The core of this measure is to improve residents' living conditions and promote sustainable regional development while preserving the historical value of national heritage. We will continue to strive for a balance between heritage preservation and regional development."

Meanwhile, details regarding the relaxation of construction standards can be found in the Notices and Announcements section of the Gyeonggi Provincial Government website.
