Gyeonggi Province Expands Use of Reusable Containers to Movie Theaters Starting August 20

Starting August 20, Gyeonggi Province will introduce reusable containers at seven movie theaters within the province, aiming to reduce single-use products and create eco-friendly movie theaters.

The seven participating theaters were selected based on demand surveys and include Megabox Misagangbyeon, Megabox Siheung Baegot, Lotte Cinema Anyang, Lotte Cinema Ansan, Lotte Cinema Central Rock, Lotte Cinema Ansan Gojan, and Lotte Cinema Gwangmyeong Outlet.

Moviegoers visiting these theaters can choose to receive their beverages in reusable containers at kiosks without any additional charge. After the movie, they can return the used containers to designated locations. The collected containers will be cleaned and sterilized through a seven-step high-temperature process by a specialized reusable container company before being supplied again.

These theaters also plan to expand the use of reusable containers to popcorn containers starting at the end of September.

Previously, in July, Gyeonggi Province conducted a pilot program introducing reusable containers at Megabox Misagangbyeon and Megabox Siheung Baegot for one month.

The province is also considering expanding the initiative to other multi-use facilities beyond movie theaters.

Lee Yongyun, Director of Resource Circulation at Gyeonggi Province, stated, "This project to support reusable containers in movie theaters is a practical attempt to reduce single-use products. It offers residents an opportunity to use reusable containers in their daily lives and reduce disposable items," adding, "We will actively expand the initiative to multi-use facilities in the future and take the lead in achieving a carbon-neutral society."
