Accelerating National R&D Initiatives with a Multi-Year Roadmap
Focusing on Marine Bio, Mobility, and Eco-Friendly Technologies
The Busan Institute of Science and Technology Promotion (BISTEP), led by President Kim Youngbu, is accelerating the implementation of a Busan-led R&D planning and attraction system in the maritime and fisheries sector, in line with the government’s national agenda of “Building a Leading K-Maritime Power in the Era of the Arctic Sea Route.”
Since the beginning of this year, BISTEP has been working with the Busan Metropolitan City to promote the “Marine New Industry Leading Sector Discovery and Development Support Project,” planning new initiatives that reflect regional strengths and global maritime trends.
The main projects include: fostering a national marine bio brand and industrialization strategy; establishing a marine mobility testbed to advance marine data services; developing a life cycle management platform for import-export logistics containers; AI-based unmanned monitoring and data collection technologies; securing operational reliability for unmanned marine mobility; developing shipbuilding equipment in response to the Arctic Sea Route; and foundational technology for mass production of CITES-compliant artificial eel fry.
Additionally, pilot demonstration projects such as the pyrolysis process for waste FRP are being conducted in parallel, with the aim of expanding the attraction of national R&D funding in the future. BISTEP is preparing a multi-year implementation roadmap rather than one-off projects, designing the entire process from policy research and feasibility analysis to demonstration linkage. The goal is to establish a regionally driven R&D ecosystem where “policy, technology, and business” are organically connected.
On August 11, an orientation was held in the Grand Ballroom of the Asti Hotel in Busan, attended by about 30 people, including principal investigators of the first and second round of selected projects, researchers, and Busan city officials. The event provided guidance on project schedules and procedures, detailed explanations for each project, and guidelines for the use of project funds, while strengthening the foundation for collaboration through networking among participants.
Kim Youngbu, President of BISTEP, stated, “Systematic planning and execution of marine new industries is a key driver for building a leading K-maritime power in the era of the Arctic Sea Route. We will fully support the entire process so that Busan can emerge as a global hub for marine new industries, focusing on promising future sectors such as the Arctic Sea Route, marine bio, and marine mobility.”
