Passing Down Traditional Ceramic Culture
and Strengthening Competitiveness
Mungyeong City, renowned for its traditional tea bowls, is moving forward with the selection of the "2025 Mungyeong City Master Ceramicist" to preserve the local ceramic industry and enhance its competitiveness.
On August 14, Mungyeong City announced that it will accept applications for candidates for the "Master Ceramicist" title until September 6. Eligible applicants must have resided in Mungyeong for at least 10 years, possess over 20 years of experience in ceramics, and be at least 50 years of age. In addition, candidates must be recommended by the head of their town, township, or neighborhood.
Document submissions will be accepted from October 13 to 17. After a review of the documents and an on-site evaluation, the final recipient will be determined by the Master Selection Committee in October. The selected master will receive a certificate and a plaque of recognition in November.
Since 2017, Mungyeong City has operated the Master Ceramicist system, producing six masters to date. These distinguished local ceramicists include Oh Jeongtaek of Wolbongyo, Kim Eokju of Hwangdamyo, Yoo Taekeun of Bangmunyo, Kim Kyungseon of Dogwangyo, Kim Jongpil of Gwanmunyo, and Park Yeontae of Gaeunyo.
A city official stated, "The selection of master ceramicists plays a vital role not only in preserving and passing down traditional techniques but also in creating added value in the modern ceramics industry. We will actively support the masters so that they can serve as driving forces for local cultural tourism and economic revitalization."
Mungyeong City plans to continue strengthening the foundation of a ceramic culture where tradition and modernity coexist through the Master Ceramicist system, and to widely promote its reputation as the home of traditional tea bowls throughout the country.
