Incheon City announced on August 13 that it had collected a total of 3,669 tons of marine debris from January to July this year in an effort to create a cleaner ocean.
The total amount of marine debris collected by the city over the past three years reached 16,000 tons, with 5,190 tons in 2022, 5,512 tons in 2023, and 5,299 tons in 2024.
Each year, the city promotes various initiatives, including coastal waste collection projects utilizing local job programs, support for the operation of cleanup transport vessels in island areas, projects to address waste on vulnerable and hard-to-access coastlines, and educational programs to raise awareness about marine environmental protection.
In the second half of the year, the city plans to expand coastal cleanup activities involving both private organizations and citizens.
On August 22, the city will conduct a cleanup activity in collaboration with the Incheon Council for Sustainable Development in the area around Sorae Wetland Ecological Park. Sorae Wetland Ecological Park is a representative coastal ecological area in Incheon and is home to a variety of species. Approximately 20 people will participate in this activity, collecting debris washed up on the coast and wetlands, while also carrying out environmental cleanup in the surrounding area.
An official from Incheon City stated, "A clean marine environment is a valuable asset that everyone must work together to protect," adding, "We will do our utmost to create a pristine ocean where everyone can visit with peace of mind."
