Approximately 200 people are expected to attend the ceremony, including Jung Myung-geun, Mayor of Hwaseong, Bae Jeong-su, Chairman of the Hwaseong City Council, descendants of independence activists, Yoon Dae-seong, President of the Hwaseong branch of the Liberation Association, Lim Heon-young, Director of the Institute for Research in Collaborationist Activities, National Assembly members, provincial and city council members, heads of related and public institutions, members of the Liberation Association, and citizens.
During the event, commendations will be presented to descendants of independence activists, and the Institute for Research in Collaborationist Activities will be recognized for its contributions to the study of Hwaseong's independence movement. This year, the Institute lent and donated 17 items, including handwritten manuscripts by the late Chairman Jo Moon-gi, to the Hwaseong City Independence Movement Memorial Hall, and in 2014, it contributed to preserving local independence history by erecting a statue of Jo Moon-gi at Maesong Elementary School.
On the same day, the city will also host a book talk concert with Bang Hyun-seok, author of the novel "Beomdo." "Beomdo" is a full-length novel depicting the lives of those who participated in the armed resistance against Japanese rule, centering on General Hong Beom-do, the hero of the Battle of Bongodong.
A variety of citizen participation events will also be offered. In the memorial hall's education room, children and families can participate in programs such as learning about Hwaseong's March 1st Movement history through picture books, creating a Taegukgi mosaic, as well as board games, spot-the-difference activities, and coloring sessions.
Additionally, the entrance road and lobby of the memorial hall will feature an 80th Liberation Anniversary poetry exhibition and a citizen-participation photo exhibition. In the main auditorium, a literary concert organized by the Gyeonggi Writers' Association will also take place.
At the Mansegil Visitor Center, there will be an exhibition for the "Citizen Contest Project for Revitalizing Key Independence Movement Sites."
Mayor Jung stated, "The spirit of Hwaseong's independence movement is not just a past event, but the root of our lives today and a compass for our future," adding, "We will ensure that the spirit of the independence movement lives on in the daily lives of our citizens by discovering and honoring independence patriots, and by expanding exhibitions and educational programs on the independence movement."
