President Lee made these remarks in a congratulatory message for the 61st anniversary of the association, which was read on his behalf by Lee Guyoun, Senior Secretary for Public Relations and Communication at the Presidential Office. He said, "I understand that the Journalists Association was founded as a focal point in the struggle against military dictatorship. Now, however, the object of our struggle has changed."

President Lee continued, "We are also faced with the grave task of achieving both stability and growth amid a rapidly changing world order. Such challenges can be overcome when our society fosters healthy debate and active communication," he said, adding, "If fair and balanced media coverage supports these efforts, it is certainly possible."

President Lee further emphasized, "The government, based on popular sovereignty, will establish a fair media environment and listen attentively to the truthful voices delivered by the press." He urged, "When the media fulfills its fundamental role by reporting truthfully and with integrity, our society will become healthier and the foundation of democracy will be strengthened."
