Jeong Cheolwon, the mayor of Damyang County in South Jeolla Province, visited the families of independence patriots within the county on August 12 to mark the 80th anniversary of Liberation Day, expressing his gratitude and respect.

Mayor Jeong and other county officials plan to visit eight households of independence patriots' families in the county by August 14, delivering consolation funds and listening to the challenges they face in their daily lives.

Patriots Go Gwangchae and Go Gwanghun, who were both from Damyang, participated in the Nokcheon Go Gwangsun Righteous Army from 1906 to 1907, engaging in anti-Japanese resistance activities. They were arrested and served prison sentences for their actions. In recognition of their contributions, they were posthumously awarded the Order of Merit for National Foundation, Patriotic Medal, in 1990.

Mayor Jeong stated, "The freedom and prosperity we enjoy today are thanks to the sacrifices and dedication of independence patriots who gave everything to their country during the prime of their lives. I extend my deepest respect and gratitude to the patriots and their families who made today's Republic of Korea possible."

Meanwhile, Damyang County continues to carry out consolation activities to honor and recognize national patriots and merit recipients every year on major national holidays, such as the March 1st Movement Day, the Month of Patriots and Veterans, and Liberation Day.
