All Administrative Resources Mobilized for Recovery and Support of Flood Victims
Hapcheon County in South Gyeongsang Province announced on the 12th that, due to the area being declared a special disaster zone following heavy rainfall in July, it has decided to cancel the 41st Dae-ya Cultural Festival, the 44th County Residents' Sports Festival, and the 21st Hapcheon Arts Festival.
The county explained that, as a result of the torrential rains, there has been significant property damage and harm to residents, including flooded homes, loss of farmland, and destruction of infrastructure. Shim Jaesang, Chairperson of the Dae-ya Cultural Festival Committee, stated, "Holding the Dae-ya Cultural Festival during such a difficult time would undermine its meaning, which is to bring the residents together in unity." He added that the committee held an emergency meeting on the 11th and resolved to cancel the event. He continued, "I hope that our residents can overcome these hardships with wisdom and quickly return to their normal lives."
In addition, the 21st Arts Festival, which was scheduled to be held over four days starting August 25, will also have all official events canceled. Only exhibitions organized by each arts association will proceed, and they will be held in a subdued atmosphere.
Lee Jeomyong, President of the Hapcheon Federation of Artistic and Cultural Organizations, said, "I believe that now is a time not for sharing joy, but for comforting each other's pain and lending support." He added, "We will look forward to the next Arts Festival, and our artists will continue to share their hearts and deliver hope in various ways."
Kim Yooncheol, Mayor of Hapcheon County, stated, "I offer my deepest condolences to all residents suffering from the flood damage." He continued, "I am grateful for the warm hearts and solidarity of our residents, who are supporting one another and striving to overcome this unexpected disaster together. The county will also concentrate all administrative resources to help restore daily life for our residents as quickly as possible."
