A Tribute from Close Friend Lee Chulwoo

Professor Lee posted a tribute, stating, "This is a grave that neither the son (former President Yoon) nor the daughter-in-law (Kim Keonhee) can visit."

On August 11, Professor Lee posted a photo of the late Professor Yoon Kijung's grave on his Facebook page, writing, "August 15 marks the second anniversary of his passing," and "I visited the grave that neither the son nor the daughter-in-law can come to." The late Professor Yoon Kijung passed away from old age on August 15, 2023. The upcoming 15th will mark the second anniversary of his death.

The post is interpreted as referring to the fact that former President Yoon, the son, is currently incarcerated, and that his daughter-in-law, Kim Keonhee, is scheduled for a detention warrant hearing on August 12. On August 7, the special prosecutor requested a detention warrant for Kim Keonhee on charges of violating the Capital Markets Act, the Political Funds Act, and the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes (bribery mediation). If Kim Keonhee is detained, it will be the first time in history that a former presidential couple is incarcerated at the same time.

Professor Lee has been a close friend of former President Yoon since elementary school and was also his classmate at Seoul National University, class of 1979, making them lifelong friends. Professor Lee's father, Lee Jongchan, president of the Liberation Association, also had a long-standing relationship with the late Professor Yoon. President Lee once served as a mentor to President Yoon. The two families are known to have maintained a close relationship for over 50 years.

In January, after the 12·3 Martial Law, Professor Lee drew attention when he criticized, "I never imagined that Yoon Sukyeol would become the leader of a far-right force that openly denies democracy in South Korea." Last month, he also gained attention for participating in a petition calling for the pardon and reinstatement of Cho Kuk, former leader of the Cho Kuk Innovation Party.
