Yeosu City Holds "Courtesy Practice Midnight Resolution Meeting"
in Response to Criticism Over Unfriendliness and Poor Hygiene
Recently, Yeosu City in Jeonnam, which has come under fire for issues such as unfriendliness and poor hygiene at restaurants and lodging establishments, held a "Courtesy Practice Midnight Resolution Meeting" on the 7th.
At the resolution meeting, more than 200 food and lodging business owners attended and adopted a resolution that included action items such as greeting customers with a bright smile and friendly tone, practicing honest pricing, and providing a pleasant environment for relaxation. One business owner who attended the meeting said, "It is unfortunate that the entire region is viewed negatively due to the inadequate management of some establishments," and added, "Taking this resolution meeting as an opportunity, I will work even harder to improve service and hygiene management."

On the morning of the same day, the city held an "Emergency Countermeasures Meeting on Unfriendliness, Poor Hygiene, and Overcharging at Food and Lodging Establishments" to discuss improvement measures. The improvement measures discussed included designating and managing establishments with issues of unfriendliness, poor hygiene, and overcharging as priority management businesses; designating one-person restaurants and promoting one-person table distribution; providing on-site hygiene education; launching the "Three Practices Campaign" (warm smiles, clean food, and honest pricing); operating joint public-private inspection teams; implementing a restaurant manager system; strengthening customer service training; and designating and providing incentives to establishments with stable pricing.
Meanwhile, Yeosu City has recently been the subject of controversy following a series of reports about unfriendliness and poor hygiene at food and lodging establishments.
On August 6, a user posted on social media that at a resort-style hotel in Yeosu, where the nightly rate is as high as 400,000 won, they used a towel from the room to wipe their child, only to discover the word "rag" written on it. Afterwards, a series of comments sharing dissatisfaction with the hotel and trips to Yeosu appeared online.
Previously, last month, there was also an incident at a well-known local restaurant involving a "solo dining YouTuber." At this restaurant, which is famous for having been visited by celebrities, a video was released showing a travel YouTuber being rushed to eat quickly and treated poorly while dining alone, which drew nationwide criticism. In response, Yeosu City issued an official statement, saying, "We apologize for the occurrence of unfriendliness despite regular courtesy training and on-site inspections," and added, "We will use this as an opportunity to make substantial improvements to the service quality in the food industry."
