Office of the President: "Plans to launch a consumption promotion campaign"
The Office of the President announced on August 7 that, following the distribution of livelihood recovery consumption coupons, sales in essential daily sectors such as restaurants have increased.
The Ministry of the Interior and Safety analyzed data provided by nine credit card companies on consumption coupon usage and sales by sector, based on credit and debit card transactions from July 21 to August 3. As of midnight on August 3, it was found that 2.6518 trillion won, or 46% of the 5.7679 trillion won in consumption coupons distributed via credit and debit cards, had been used.
Total sales at all affiliated stores during the fourth week of July, when the coupon distribution began, increased by 19.5% compared to the third week of July. Sales in the fifth week of July rose by 8.4% compared to the third week. By sector, general restaurants saw the highest coupon usage at 1.0989 trillion won (41.4%), followed by marts and groceries at 407.7 billion won (15.4%), convenience stores at 257.9 billion won (9.7%), hospitals and pharmacies at 214.8 billion won (8.1%), clothing and miscellaneous goods at 106 billion won (4.0%), private academies at 100.6 billion won (3.8%), and leisure and recreation at 76 billion won (2.9%).
Sectors with the largest increases in sales were restaurants (267.7 billion won), fuel stations (132.6 billion won), clothing and miscellaneous goods (104.2 billion won), and marts and groceries (88.4 billion won), showing a marked rise in essential daily sectors.
The Office of the President stated, "With the issuance of consumption coupons reviving consumer sentiment, the government plans to launch a consumption promotion campaign to encourage the public to use them quickly." The office added, "In particular, through the 'Regional Revitalization and Win-Win Consumption Promotion Plan' announced today, we will encourage the use of consumption coupons outside the Seoul metropolitan area as well, so that it can serve as a catalyst for revitalizing local economies."
