Various Events to Be Held to Mark the 80th Anniversary of Liberation

Changwon Special City will hold a variety of commemorative events throughout August to mark the 80th anniversary of Liberation, with participation from local citizens.

On August 9, an event will be held to tour memorial sites related to the anti-Japanese independence movement in the Changwon area. On August 12, there will be a ceremony for enshrining the memorial tablets of patriots and an unveiling ceremony for a monument honoring independence activists at the Patriots’ Shrine. On Liberation Day, August 15, major events such as the “80th Anniversary of Liberation and Masan Defense Battle Victory Commemorative Concert” are scheduled to take place.


The “80th Anniversary of Liberation Changwon Anti-Japanese Movement Memorial Site Historical Tour,” scheduled for August 9, will provide an opportunity for descendants of independence patriots in Changwon to visit sites of the independence movement. With professional commentary, participants will reflect on the meaning of liberation and the noble values of the independence movement.


At 10:00 a.m. on August 12, a ceremony to enshrine the memorial tablets of patriots and an unveiling ceremony for a monument honoring independence activists will be held at the Patriots’ Shrine in Jinjeon-myeon. Currently, the shrine houses 96 memorial tablets.


This time, the memorial tablets of four independence activists?Gong Eulsu, Kim Jaeman, Kim Juseok, and Kim Changse?will be newly enshrined. The city plans to continue identifying additional candidates for enshrinement in the future. In addition, a new monument inscribed with the names of 197 independence activists from Changwon will be installed.


At 10:00 a.m. on August 15, the 23rd Memorial Ceremony for Patriot Danjeong Bae Jungse will be held at Danjeong Park in Sangnam-dong. On the same day at 6:30 p.m., the “80th Anniversary of Liberation and Masan Defense Battle Victory Commemorative Concert” will take place at the outdoor stage of Masan 3·15 Marine Nuri Park. The concert will feature performances by the Navy Band and the Gyeongnam Jazz Orchestra. Approximately 450 people, including descendants of independence patriots, families of national merit, and citizens, are expected to attend and share in the emotion of liberation.


In addition, the “Changwon Independence Activist Promotion Certification Photo Event” will run until August 31. This event, aimed at promoting the contributions of local independence activists and spreading a culture of honoring national merit, can be accessed through the Changwon city website.


Other events, including a pilgrimage to historical sites organized by the Liberation Association and the 80th Anniversary Liberation Day Writing Contest, will also be held throughout Changwon.


Jang Geumyong, acting mayor of Changwon Special City, stated, “I hope the 80th anniversary of Liberation will serve as an opportunity for all citizens to honor the spirit of sacrifice of our patriotic ancestors and to renew our gratitude. We will continue to show respect for independence patriots and foster a spirit of love for our country.”
