Special Investigation Team on Insurrection to Question Former Minister Kim Yonghyun in First Visit on August 11

Special Investigation Team on the Death of Marine Chae to Visit Former Minister Kim on the 18th

The special investigation team on the insurrection will question former Defense Minister Kim Yonghyun, a key figure in the 12·3 Martial Law, for the first time on August 11.

According to the legal community on August 6, the special investigation team plans to visit Seoul Eastern Detention Center at 2:00 p.m. on August 11 to question former Minister Kim as a reference witness.

The special investigation team is reportedly planning to question former Minister Kim about matters related to the charges against former Interior and Safety Minister Lee Sangmin. Former Minister Lee was arrested on August 1 on charges of effectively condoning the martial law, participating in the insurrection by relaying former President Yoon Sukyeol's orders to cut off electricity and water to media companies to the National Police Agency and the National Fire Agency, among other allegations.

The special investigation team suspects that former Minister Kim may have informed former Minister Lee in advance about the martial law by phone before the Cabinet meeting. The team believes that former Minister Lee was aware of the martial law declaration ahead of time, considering that he booked a KTX train ticket to Seoul in advance while attending a regional kimchi-making event on December 3, 2024.

This is the first time former Minister Kim will be questioned by the special investigation team.

The special investigation team led by Lee Myunghyun, which is investigating allegations of external pressure and cover-up in the death of Marine Chae Sangbyeong, also plans to visit the Eastern Detention Center at 2:00 p.m. on August 18 to question former Minister Kim.
