Fisheries Technology Startup Megaplan Secures Pre-A Investment from Bluepoint Partners

Fisheries technology startup Megaplan announced on August 6 that it has secured a Pre-A investment from Bluepoint Partners, a leading domestic accelerator (AC). Specific details regarding company valuation and investment amount remain undisclosed.

Globally, mackerel populations have declined by 74% over the past 40 years, and the species is projected to be at risk of extinction by 2050. Megaplan has established a land-based aquaculture system based on its proprietary year-round mackerel spawning technology. The company aims to address seafood supply challenges caused by high water temperatures due to global warming, as well as microplastics and marine pollution, through land-based aquaculture.

If Megaplan's system can resolve unstable seafood supply issues, consumers will be able to enjoy seafood at more affordable prices. Megaplan's goal is to enable people worldwide to purchase a mackerel for one dollar.

Leveraging its patented mackerel spawning technology, Megaplan is currently operating a land-based mackerel farm in Pyoseon-ri, Seogwipo, Jeju Island. In January, the company successfully shipped and sold its first generation of artificially spawned mackerel.

Bluepoint Partners focused on the fact that Megaplan has demonstrated its technological capabilities by operating an actual land-based aquaculture facility. Ham Seulbeom, Principal Investment Officer at Bluepoint Partners, stated, "This team offers an innovative solution to address mackerel supply issues and environmental challenges by utilizing land-based aquarium aquaculture technology. Through the digitalization of the entire cycle from spawning to sales, Megaplan will bring significant innovation to mackerel aquaculture."

Yoo Chulwon, CEO of Megaplan, said, "This investment marks a crucial turning point in making Megaplan's dream of the 'one-dollar mackerel' a reality. We will strive not only to contribute to domestic food security but also to help end global hunger, in line with the UN's 'Zero Hunger' project."

Meanwhile, Megaplan previously attracted seed investment from Infobank and TheVentures, and was also selected for the Ministry of SMEs and Startups' technology startup support program 'TIPS.'
