"Korean History and Cinema Are Fully Reflected in His Works"
Director Chung Ji-young, known for "Nambugun" and "The Life of Hollywood Kid," will receive the Korean Cinema Award at the 30th Busan International Film Festival.
The Busan International Film Festival announced on the 6th that the award ceremony will take place during the opening ceremony at the Busan Cinema Center on September 17. Busan International Film Festival Executive Director Jung Hanseok explained the selection by saying, "He has been an outstanding director for many years and is currently preparing a new film as the oldest active director. His life and films are deeply intertwined with the history of Korea and Korean cinema."
Director Chung, who made his debut in 1982 with "The Mist Whispers Like a Woman," has, for over 40 years, captured the undercurrents of Korean society and the challenges of each era. By directly addressing weighty themes such as social conflict, human rights, and the pursuit of justice, he has left a significant mark on the history of Korean cinema. His notable works include "Nambugun," "White Badge," "The Life of Hollywood Kid," "Unbowed," and "Black Money."
Director Chung stated, "I have worked through both the dark ages and the golden era of Korean cinema, and continue my film work even today, as the industry faces new crises. I consider this award to be on behalf of all my colleagues?both seniors and juniors?who have shared these years with me in the film industry."
