Kim Chunsik, a professor in the Department of Energy Management at Dongshin University, has been inaugurated as the 19th president of the Korean Society for German History, it was announced on August 5. His term will last for two years, until June 30, 2027.
The Korean Society for German History, established in 2001, is a nationwide academic society focusing on German and Western history, with around 200 members actively participating. The society publishes the academic journal "German Studies," which has been selected as a registered journal by the National Research Foundation of Korea, three times a year (February, August, and November). It also strengthens networks among domestic and international researchers through regular academic conferences, international symposia, and various academic forums and seminars.
President Kim stated, "AI is transforming not only the methodologies of humanities research but also the selection of research topics and methods of interpretation. Convergent research, such as systematic interpretation and comparative studies of vast historical data using AI-based data analysis, is being further promoted," he said. "While the advancement of generative AI such as ChatGPT has improved research efficiency, it is also necessary to discuss the authenticity, research ethics, and the essence of creativity."
He added, "Both the Korean Society for German History and all of its members need to consider the mutually complementary development of AI and the humanities," and continued, "I will do my best to achieve academic growth through a sincere approach at the society level, including hosting online domestic and international academic conferences utilizing AI technology, conducting interdisciplinary convergent research with various fields such as German history and social sciences, and establishing sustainable development plans for international joint academic conferences."
President Kim earned his master's degrees in history, education, and political science at the University of Hamburg in Germany, and received his Ph.D. in philosophy (modern and contemporary Western history) focusing on German-Chinese relations. He later served as an invited professor in the Department of History at the same university and as a professor in the Division of Humanities and Social Sciences at POSTECH.
Last year, he was selected as the first humanities scholar to receive the "Karman Overseas Distinguished Scholar" award, presented by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research and RWTH Aachen University. He is also actively working as a senior fellow at the University of Mittlestand in Germany, chairperson of the Jeonnam Province Talent Development Policy Advisory Committee, international exchange advisor, and as director and chairperson of the Humanities Education Committee at the Korea-Germany Network.
