On August 3, at a press conference held before the Coupang Play Series friendly match between Tottenham and Newcastle United at Seoul World Cup Stadium, Son Heung-min officially announced his departure from Tottenham. He said, "I decided to leave the team this summer," and added, "It was one of the hardest decisions I've had to make in my football career." He further explained the reason for his decision to transfer, stating, "Winning the UEFA Europa League made me feel that I had achieved and done everything I could," and "I needed a new environment and wanted to start again with a new motivation."

LAFC was one of the teams mentioned as a possible destination for Son Heung-min during the off-season. With the North and Central America World Cup set to be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico next year, there was also a forecast that Son Heung-min would move to MLS, which would help him adapt to the environment ahead of the World Cup.

At the press conference, Son Heung-min hinted at a move to MLS by saying, "The World Cup is the most important," and added, "It could be my last World Cup, so I need an environment where I can give everything I have."

LAFC, where Son Heung-min is likely to join, is an emerging powerhouse in MLS. Founded in 2014, the club has participated in the MLS league since 2018, winning the championship in 2022 and finishing as runners-up in 2023. Based in the same city of LA, LAFC has a rivalry with LA Galaxy, which holds the record for the most MLS titles with six championships. If Son Heung-min joins LAFC, he will reunite with goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, who played with him at Tottenham from his debut until 2023.
