Pohang City will begin accepting site applications for the new household waste treatment facility, "Pohang Ecovillage," from August 6 until October 31, for a period of three months.

Pohang Ecovillage Site Application Open... Up to 96 Billion KRW in Resident Support Benefits Over 30 Years Integrated bird's-eye view of Pohang Ecovillage.

Pohang Ecovillage is a major infrastructure project being promoted to ensure the stable and eco-friendly treatment of household waste generated throughout Pohang. It is being developed as a core facility in preparation for the end of use of the current Hodong 2 Landfill and the household waste-to-energy facility.

The site will include six treatment facilities: an incineration facility, a landfill facility, a bulky waste treatment facility, a food waste recycling facility, a recycling sorting facility, and a leachate treatment facility. In addition, resident convenience facilities such as sports facilities, a performance hall, a library, a park, and rest areas will also be established for the welfare of citizens.

The eligible sites for application must be areas of at least 400,000 square meters that are not restricted by land use regulations. The city will comprehensively consider geographic conditions, accessibility, and the potential for future expansion, and will prioritize locations that are economically viable and actively supported by local residents.

The application period will close at the end of October. In December, a site selection committee composed of resident representatives, city council members, and relevant experts will be formed to conduct feasibility studies and strategic environmental impact assessments of the candidate sites. The final site will be determined in December 2026 after a comprehensive review of factors including resident acceptance.

To apply for the project, residents who have lived in the relevant eup, myeon, or dong for at least three years must form an invitation committee. They must obtain the consent of at least 70% of candidate site residents, landowners, the local leaders’ council, and the development advisory committee. Applications must be submitted to the Pohang City Resource Circulation Division with a recommendation letter and review opinion from the head of the eup, myeon, or dong.

The area selected as the final site will receive continuous support benefits for 30 years, including the installation of resident convenience facilities worth a total of 45 billion KRW, and the establishment of a resident support fund of approximately 1.7 billion KRW per year.

During the application period, the city plans to improve public awareness and resident acceptance of the waste treatment facility through media promotion, explanatory sessions in each eup, myeon, and dong, and benchmarking tours to advanced sites. The entire site selection process will be managed transparently and objectively to prevent unnecessary misunderstandings or complaints.

Do Myung, Director of the Environmental Bureau, stated, "Pohang Ecovillage is a key infrastructure for sustainable urban development and efficient household waste management. By applying advanced equipment and eco-friendly treatment technologies, we aim to minimize environmental damage and create a landmark and opportunity facility for Pohang that contributes to income generation and quality of life improvements for local residents."

Detailed information about the open site application can be found in the notice and announcement section of the Pohang City Hall website.
