150 Homes Flooded in Jeonnam; Chickens and Pigs Die in Hampyeong

149 Damage Reports in Gwangju, Including Flooded Roads and Buildings
On August 3, record-breaking torrential rains hit the Gwangju and Jeonnam regions, causing a series of damages including flooding of homes and farmland, as well as the death of livestock.

According to Gwangju City and Jeonnam Province officials on August 5, the heavy rain caused flooding in 150 homes in Jeonnam. By region, 76 homes were flooded in Hampyeong, 70 in Muan, and 2 each in Sinan and Muan. A whiteleg shrimp farm in Hampyeong suffered losses of 2 million shrimp, while 32,000 chickens (Hampyeong), 5,000 ducks (Muan), and 246 pigs (Hampyeong) were reported dead.
Although drainage operations were carried out, 1,003 hectares of farmland, including rice, beans, sesame, chili peppers, and fruit orchards, were flooded. In addition, 190 hectares of green onion and sesame fields suffered lodging damage. In Muan, an embankment was damaged and emergency repairs are underway, while in Hampyeong, a road that suffered slope collapse and pavement damage has been restored.
A man in his 60s who had gone missing the previous afternoon was found dead, but there has not yet been an official tally of casualties resulting from this natural disaster.

In Gwangju, a total of 149 damage reports were received, including road and building flooding and water supply disruptions. By type, there were 37 cases of road flooding, 52 cases of building flooding, 1 case of vehicle flooding, 2 cases of slope collapse, 14 cases of sewage problems, 32 cases of water supply disruption, and 11 other cases. By district, Gwangsan-gu had the highest number of reports with 98, followed by Seo-gu with 41 and Buk-gu with 10. No damage reports were received from Nam-gu or Dong-gu.
Authorities plan to investigate the damage in each sector, including agriculture, livestock, fisheries, and roads, and will prepare support measures according to the extent of the damage.
