Suwon City in Gyeonggi Province has produced 10 certified "Manner Dogs" and 32 dogs with educational certification through its Manner Dog Certification System.
A Manner Dog refers to a dog registered in Suwon City that has passed a 10-stage training process and is able to observe public etiquette. Suwon City provides education for companion dogs and their owners, and certifies Manner Dogs through a series of tests as part of the Manner Dog Certification System.
The 10-stage public etiquette test includes: ▲ recall from 5 meters ▲ interacting with a stranger for 2 minutes ▲ responding to unexpected environments ▲ reacting to encounters with other companion dogs ▲ waiting at a designated location, among others. These stages are designed to teach dogs to follow rules in public spaces so as not to cause inconvenience to others.
The Manner Dog certification is a two-year process. After receiving educational certification (first certification) in the first year, the dog must pass an additional test in the second year to be certified as a Manner Dog (second certification).
Last year, for the first time, 20 companion dogs received educational certification. This year, 10 dogs were certified as Manner Dogs through the certification test, and 32 dogs received educational certification.
Manner Dogs are allowed to enter six public facilities, including the Gwanggyo Lake Park Visitor Center and the administrative welfare centers in Yulcheon-dong, Ipbook-dong, Gwanggyo 2-dong, Saeryu 1-dong, and Woncheon-dong. Eighteen locations related to companion dogs, such as animal hospitals, offer preferential benefits to Manner Dogs.
Suwon City plans to continuously expand the number of businesses offering preferential treatment to Manner Dogs.
A Suwon City official stated, "The Manner Dog Certification System will play a significant role in fostering a proper culture for companion animals," and added, "We will strive to create a livable city where pet owners and non-pet owners can harmoniously coexist."
