This exhibition is a large-scale special event showcasing 143 major works from the Johannesburg Art Gallery in South Africa, offering a comprehensive overview of the history of Western art. Curated by Simona Bartolena, an Italian art historian and curator, the exhibition is organized into nine sections, each representing a key period in 400 years of art history, from the Dutch Golden Age of the 17th century to contemporary art of the 20th century.

The exhibition began at the Gyeongju Arts Center in December of last year, and has since toured four cities over two years: Busan Cultural Center, Jeju Museum of Contemporary Art, and now the Sejong Center in Seoul, receiving enthusiastic responses at each location. The traveling exhibition, which has continued for 18 months mainly at national and public art museums, is seen as a meaningful example of expanding Seoul-centered cultural consumption to regional areas. It is also notable for sharing cultural experiences, previously concentrated in major cities, with audiences nationwide.

The depth and quality of the exhibition have also drawn attention. Kim Chanyong, Korea’s first official docent, provided the official audio guide for the entire exhibition, helping visitors easily and engagingly understand the context of the artworks. At the Seoul venue, more than 100 people participated in each of his docent tours, reflecting the enthusiastic response. Yang Jungmu, a professor at Korea National University of Arts, and art critic Park Woochan wrote the exhibition commentaries, while YouTuber Millanonna, who has one million subscribers, served as the Seoul exhibition ambassador, further boosting public interest.

The 143 masterpieces from the Johannesburg Art Gallery featured in this exhibition will return to South Africa immediately after the Seoul exhibition ends, in preparation for a special exhibition commemorating the G20 Summit in November.

Gaudium Associates, which co-organized the exhibition with the Sejong Center, celebrated its 10th anniversary by distributing exhibition guides and coloring experience pages to visitors during the exhibition period, and also hosted various interactive events. CEO Kim Daesung stated, "Although the masterpieces from the Johannesburg Art Gallery that have been with us for nearly two years will soon return home, this exhibition will remain a meaningful cultural milestone, offering a rare opportunity to view 400 years of Western art history in one place."

The exhibition will continue at the Sejong Center Art Museum until the 31st.
