The Seoul Arts Center announced on August 4 that the Saturday Concert stage on August 16 will feature only three works by Beethoven.
The three pieces to be performed on this day were also played at a concert held in March 1807 at the residence of Prince Lobkowitz, one of Beethoven's most enthusiastic patrons.
The first piece to be performed is the "Coriolan Overture." Beethoven composed this tragic overture based on a play by Austrian playwright Collin, powerfully depicting the inner conflict of the human spirit.
The second piece, Piano Concerto No. 4, was premiered by Beethoven himself at the aforementioned concert. At this Saturday Concert, pianist Kim Suyeon will perform as the soloist. Kim Suyeon became the first Asian to win the 2021 Montreal International Competition. Previously, she won the Hummel International Piano Competition in 2014, as well as the International Competition for Spanish Composers, where she also received the Special Prize for Contemporary Music. In 2020, she was awarded second prize at the Mozart International Competition.
The final piece will be Beethoven's Symphony No. 4.
Lee Byungwook, artistic director and principal conductor of the Gwangju Symphony Orchestra, will conduct the KBS Symphony Orchestra and also provide commentary on the works.
Another matin?e concert at the Seoul Arts Center, the 11 O'Clock Concert in collaboration with Hanwha Life, is scheduled for August 14.
At the 11 O'Clock Concert, a total of four pieces will be performed. The program will begin with the overture to Rossini's opera "William Tell," followed by Rossini's "Bassoon Concerto" and the first movement of Beethoven's "Triple Concerto."
Bassoonist Kim Hyunjun, a graduate of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra Academy, will perform alongside the chamber ensemble Lux Trio, which gained attention after winning third prize, the Audience Prize, and the Contemporary Music Interpretation Prize at the 2018 Munich ARD Competition.
The final piece to be performed will be Brahms' "Variations on a Theme by Haydn."
Jung Nara, adjunct professor at Hanyang University College of Music, will conduct, and the Prime Philharmonic Orchestra will perform. Actor Kang Seokwoo will provide commentary on the works.
