Spread of 'Book-cation' Culture
Experience Programs Receive Positive Response
Gwangyang Kkumbit Library in Jeollanam-do is gaining attention as an urban summer retreat for citizens weary from the heat.
The library officially opened on June 5, 2025, and since the temporary opening in May, the cumulative number of visitors has reached approximately 26,000. In particular, during the summer vacation period, more than 500 people visit the library each day on average, making it a popular destination for families.

This popularity is closely linked to both the early onset of the heat and the spread of the 'book-cation' culture, where people seek quiet relaxation with books. Citizens enjoy sitting on bean bag sofas, reading, and appreciating the blue sky and green leaves visible through the large glass windows, spending relaxing and pleasant time in the city.
Although the purposes of use vary by age group, the space that receives the most enthusiastic response from children is the self-directed creative experience area called 'Kkumtteurak.' Here, more than 80 types of creative materials are available, allowing children to freely express their imagination. Its convenient location and comfortable environment have led to a steady stream of young visitors throughout the summer vacation period.
In addition to the prepared materials, 'seasonal materials' provided each month also add to the appeal. In July, for example, paper fans were made available so children could create their own fans for summer use, and those who wished could display their finished works in the Kkumtteurak exhibition space.
Taking into account that children often remain in the library after participating in self-directed activities to read with their parents or friends, the library is running a 'summer vacation program' designed to further stimulate their interest in reading.
The programs currently offered include three main activities: 'I Am a Young Yun Dong-ju,' which helps children express their inner emotions through poetry writing; 'Fun Fun Book Art,' a picture book-based art program for young children; and 'Brain Play with Iclay,' where children create stories and stimulate their imagination based on books.
'I Am a Young Yun Dong-ju' is a program where children compile the poems they write during class into their own poetry book, making it especially popular among those interested in writing.
'Fun Fun Book Art' is a program for both guardians and children, where they read picture books together, create related works, and share stories, resulting in high user satisfaction.
'Brain Play with Iclay' is a program where children listen to picture book stories and express their impressions through creative activities. Recruitment for participants is currently underway, so those interested in library activities or planning a book-cation this summer are encouraged to join.
In addition, on August 18, a children's musical titled 'Wright Brothers,' themed around learning, perseverance, dreams, and hope, will be performed. With lively songs and dynamic visuals, it promises to offer children and families a unique and enjoyable experience during the hot summer.
Other offerings at Kkumbit Library include a 'Book of the Year' puzzle challenge, a copying corner, an exhibition of pop-up books from around the world that blend artistry and imagination, reading activities linked to children's recommended books, and a special summer vacation event called 'Attendance King.' Visitors can enjoy a variety of cultural programs, play, and relaxation all in one place.
Kim Hyunsook, head of the Gwangyang City Library Department, stated, "During the summer, the library is becoming an urban retreat where rest and culture coexist and a special travel destination in everyday life. We will continue to operate a variety of cultural programs so that citizens can relax and enjoy warm emotions in their daily lives, and we ask for your continued interest."
