The heat wave advisories in Gwangju and Jeonnam have been lifted, and heavy rainfall is expected in the region.
According to the Gwangju Regional Meteorological Administration on August 3, heavy rain advisories are currently in effect for 19 areas in Gwangju and Jeonnam (Naju, Damyang, Gokseong, Gurye, Jangseong, Hwasun, Goheung, Boseong, Suncheon, Jangheung, Gangjin, Haenam, Wando, Yeongam, Muan, Hampyeong, Yeonggwang, Mokpo, and Jindo), while heavy rain warnings have been issued for Sinan, Heuksando, and Hongdo.
As the rain began, all heat wave advisories previously issued across Gwangju and Jeonnam were lifted after 12 days.
As of 5 p.m. on August 3, cumulative precipitation recorded was 114 mm in Heuksando, 47 mm in Jaeundo (Sinan), 42 mm at Chosun University in Gwangju, 38.5 mm in Iyang (Hwasun), and 36.5 mm in Bongsan (Damyang).
Rainfall is expected to be most intense from the night of August 3 through the morning of August 4, with most areas of Gwangju and Jeonnam experiencing heavy rain at rates of 30 to 50 mm per hour, and areas near the southern coast of Jeonnam and around Jirisan seeing even heavier rainfall of 50 to 80 mm per hour.
By the morning of August 5, total expected precipitation is 80 to 150 mm for Gwangju and Jeonnam, and more than 200 mm for the southern coast of Jeonnam and areas near Jirisan.
An official from the Gwangju Meteorological Administration stated, "Please be especially cautious of flooding in low-lying areas, river overflows, and rapid currents, as there is a risk of becoming stranded when using riverside trails or underpasses."
