Jeong Cheongrae Elected as New Democratic Party Leader, Leads All but Delegates' Vote (Comprehensive)

Jeong Cheongrae wins by a landslide with 61.74%
Park Chandae falls behind with 38.26%
Jeong Cheongrae secures victory among both rights-holding party members and the national electoral college

Jeong Cheongrae, a four-term lawmaker, has been elected as the new leader of the Democratic Party of Korea.


On August 2, Jeong was elected with a cumulative total of 61.74% of the votes in the party leader election at the 2nd Extraordinary National Party Convention held at KINTEX in Goyang, Gyeonggi Province. Park Chandae, the other candidate for party leader, received 38.26% of the votes.


This party leadership election determined the ranking by combining 15% of the delegates' votes, 55% of the rights-holding party members' votes, and 30% of the general public opinion poll. Jeong led by a wide margin in both the rights-holding party members' votes and the general public opinion poll, except for the delegates' votes.

Jeong received 66.48% from rights-holding party members, 46.91% from delegates, and 60.46% from the national electoral college. Park received 53.59% from delegates, but only 33.52% from rights-holding party members and 39.54% from the national electoral college.


Jeong's vote percentage did not reach the levels recorded by President Lee in last year's and the 2022 party conventions, which were 85.4% and 77.77%, respectively.


Meanwhile, in the by-election for the Supreme Council member, which was held following the resignation of former Supreme Council member Kim Minseok after his nomination as Prime Minister, Hwang Myungseon, who ran unopposed, was confirmed after a yes-or-no vote.
