"Residents Pay the Electricity Bill"... Complaint to Remove Fan from Security Office Sparks Controversy

Appeal Letter Found in an Apartment in Bucheon, Gyeonggi Province
Issue Raised Over Shared Electricity Costs

Amid the ongoing heatwave, it has been revealed that a resident of an apartment complex demanded that a fan not be installed in the security guard's office, sparking widespread criticism from the public.

On July 31, a resident identified as A, who stated that they live in an apartment in Bucheon, Gyeonggi Province, posted in an online community, "There are people who won't even allow security guards to use fans in this weather," and shared an 'appeal letter' that was posted inside the apartment elevator.

The appeal letter in the published photo stated, "There is no air conditioner in the security office, but in this hot weather, there is a resident who protested and demanded the fan be removed just because the fan was turned on," and continued, "Please help so that security guards can work in at least minimal conditions."

According to the security guard's explanation, the resident in question raised an issue with the use of the fan, citing the burden of shared electricity costs as the reason.

Resident A criticized, "Let's not act inhumanely. The perceived temperature exceeds 40 degrees Celsius. The security office is terribly hot," and added, "I was shocked after seeing the appeal letter in the elevator. Is it really such a problem for elderly security guards, after working hard, to want a bit of breeze in a suffocating space?"

As the controversy grew within the complex, another resident posted a note inside the elevator stating, "The security office is not just a rest area but a workspace," and added, "Guaranteeing a minimal working environment is not just a matter of consideration but a basic right. Let's not abuse our power and live as decent people. We are always grateful to the security guards."

The appeal letter was reportedly submitted to the building manager through the apartment representative. As a result, the management office is expected to discuss possible measures in the future.

Under current law, it is mandatory to provide a rest area for security guards in multi-unit housing, but there is no regulation requiring an air conditioner to be installed inside the security office. Therefore, the working environment for security guards is largely influenced by the awareness of residents and the commitment of management.
