First K-pop Song in 13 Years to Top the UK Official Singles Chart Since "Gangnam Style"
Also Ranks No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100
The original soundtrack "GOLDEN" from Netflix's "K-pop Demon Hunters" has reached No. 1 on the UK's Official Singles Chart Top 100. This marks the first time in 13 years that a K-pop song has topped the UK Official Chart since Psy's "Gangnam Style" in 2012.
According to the latest UK Official Chart released on August 2, GOLDEN climbed three spots from the previous week to claim the top position in its sixth week on the singles chart. The UK Official Chart is considered one of the two major global charts, alongside the US Billboard Chart.
"K-pop Demon Hunters" is a Netflix animated film about the K-pop idol group Huntrix, who protect the world from evil spirits through their music. As the film gained popularity, the song GOLDEN, performed by Huntrix in the movie, also became a sensation.
The track entered the Official Singles Chart Top 100 at No. 93 around the end of June, then rapidly climbed to No. 31, No. 20, No. 9, and No. 4. Finally, in the latest chart released on August 1, it rose three more places from the previous week to reach No. 1.
The Official Chart Company stated, "Netflix's 'K-pop Demon Hunters,' which has become a phenomenon, has dominated this week's Official Chart," and added, "The most recent case of a K-pop artist topping the Official Singles Chart was Psy's 'Gangnam Style' in 2012."
In addition to GOLDEN, several other tracks from "K-pop Demon Hunters" made it onto the Official Chart. "Your Idol" ranked No. 10, "Soda Pop" ranked No. 11, and "TAKEDOWN" ranked No. 63.
GOLDEN was performed by composer EJAE, a former SM Entertainment trainee, Korean-American singer Audrey Nuna, and Ray Ami. Teddy from the domestic agency The Black Label also participated in composing the song. Some of the lyrics are in Korean, such as "eternally unbreakable."
GOLDEN also reached No. 1 on Melon's "Top 100" chart, the leading music streaming site in Korea, and ranked No. 2 on the US Billboard Hot 100 main singles chart.
