On this day, Minister Lee visited the campsite in Mail-ri, Jojong-myeon, Gapyeong-gun, which was damaged by the floods, and the Emergency Rescue Control Center (CP) set up in Deokhyeon-ri, Sang-myeon. He received briefings on the damage and the progress of recovery efforts, and encouraged residents and search and rescue personnel.
At the site, Minister Lee stated, "The damage caused by the heavy rainfall is more serious than expected, which is very regrettable." He added, "Since recovery efforts are ongoing despite the heatwave, please pay special attention to the health and safety of volunteers and on-site workers to prevent accidents."
Minister Lee particularly emphasized, "We must closely monitor whether emergency support and relief are being properly provided to disaster-vulnerable groups such as isolated residents and elderly people living alone." He continued, "During the search for missing persons, please be mindful of the desperate feelings of their families and do your utmost until the very end."
As of August 1, Gapyeong-gun suffered significant damage from this torrential rain, with 6 deaths, 1 missing person, and 125 displaced residents still unaccounted for. In addition, large-scale damage occurred due to landslides and river flooding, including destruction of roads and bridges, flooding of homes, and loss of farmland.
On the same day, Minister Lee also visited Hwangsaebawi in Daeseong-ri, Cheongpyeong-myeon, to inspect summer water safety management and encourage safety personnel on site. At this location, he told military officials, "Adhering to basic safety rules such as wearing life jackets and prohibiting swimming under the influence of alcohol is key to preventing accidents." He also asked them to pay special attention to the health of safety personnel exposed to the heatwave.
He also visited a heat shelter in Jojong-myeon to inspect its management and check on the well-being of the elderly residents.
At the site, Seo Taewon, Governor of Gapyeong-gun, told Minister Lee, "The scale of this flood damage is so large that it is difficult for the county to achieve a swift and complete recovery on its own. Active and immediate support from the central government is urgently needed. The county will also focus all administrative efforts to ensure a rapid recovery from this disaster."
