Typhoon Krosa Approaches Tokyo Metropolitan Area

Typhoon Krosa, the ninth typhoon of the season, is approaching the Kanto region, which includes the Tokyo metropolitan area, on August 1.


According to NHK, as of 5:00 p.m. on this day, Krosa is moving northward at a speed of 15 km/h over the sea northeast of Hachijojima, an island south of Tokyo. The central pressure of the typhoon is 975 hPa, and near the center of the typhoon, maximum wind speeds reach 25 meters per second, with maximum instantaneous wind speeds of up to 35 meters per second.


Krosa is expected to move northeast over the sea east of Chiba Prefecture, near Tokyo, in the morning of August 2. Accordingly, NHK reported that there is a possibility of heavy rain accompanied by thunder in the Kanto region and surrounding areas until August 2.


Meanwhile, in western Honshu, which is far from the typhoon's path, temperatures exceeded 40 degrees Celsius on this day. According to Kyodo News, the highest temperature in Kuwana City, Mie Prefecture, Honshu, reached 40.4 degrees Celsius. The Japan Meteorological Agency announced on this day that the average temperature in Japan in July was 2.89 degrees higher than normal. This is the highest figure since statistics began in 1898.
