New Continuing Unemployment Claims at 1.946 Million
Falls Short of Market Expectations
Last week, the number of new unemployment benefit claims in the United States fell short of market expectations.
According to the U.S. Department of Labor on July 31 (local time), the number of new unemployment benefit claims for the week of July 20 to 26 was recorded at 218,000.
This figure increased by 1,000 compared to the previous week's 217,000, marking the first rise in seven weeks. However, it remains at a low level. It was also 4,000 fewer than the market expectation of 222,000.
The number of continuing unemployment benefit claims, which counts those claiming benefits for more than two weeks, was 1,946,000 for the week of July 13 to 19. This was the same as the previous week, and 14,000 fewer than the market expectation of 1,960,000.
As forecasts suggest that President Donald Trump's aggressive tariff policies could lead to a slowdown in the labor market, Wall Street is closely monitoring employment indicators.
