On July 31, the Busan-Jinhae Free Economic Zone Authority (Commissioner Park Sungho) visited Geoje City, Gyeongnam Province, to tour the proposed hinterland urban development area for the Gadeokdo New Airport and the planned site for the Corporate Innovation Park, and discussed major issues with Geoje Mayor Byun Kwangyong.
This visit was arranged to explore ways to promote balanced regional development and activate private investment through strategic projects in Geoje City linked to Gadeokdo New Airport, as well as to discuss the development potential of the free economic zone and possible cooperation measures.
Commissioner Park first visited the proposed hinterland urban area in Gwanpo-ri, Jangmok-myeon, received explanations regarding tourism and leisure functions, accessibility to the new airport, and residential conditions, and reviewed the development direction.
He then visited the site of the Corporate Innovation Park currently under development in Guyoung-ri, Jangmok-myeon, where he was briefed on the integrated development plan combining tourism, accommodation, industry, residential, and educational functions, as well as the progress of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's efforts to designate the area as a corporate city. He exchanged opinions on possible institutional support measures.
Commissioner Park Sungho stated, "Geoje is not only adjacent to Gadeokdo New Airport and the free economic zone, but also has a solid foundation in the shipbuilding and marine industries," adding, "We will work closely with Geoje City to gradually specify the direction of our initiatives."
The Busan-Jinhae Free Economic Zone Authority plans to continue discussions with Geoje City following this site visit and will also consider, in the mid- to long-term, whether to expand the designation of the free economic zone.
