HD Hyundai Heavy Industries has announced a surprising performance for the second quarter of this year, and DST, a subsidiary of Atom, is expected to be a direct beneficiary.
DST supplies more than half of the cylinder modules for the HiMSEN engine series, which was independently developed by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries. The company also provides a significant portion of HiMSEN engine cylinder parts to HD Hyundai Marine Solution. The HiMSEN engine is designated as a national core technology, resulting in high entry barriers for new competitors. DST maintains its status as an excellent partner based on decades of accumulated machining technology and its ability to meet delivery deadlines.
A DST representative stated, "As orders for high-output and eco-friendly DF (Dual-Fuel) engines from HD Hyundai Heavy Industries increase, the unit price of deliveries focused on high value-added products is also on the rise. We expect the growth trend of sales related to the HD Hyundai Heavy Industries group to continue in the second half of the year."
Due to the strengthened carbon emission regulations of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the adoption rate of DF engines has surpassed 30% in global shipbuilding orders and is rapidly expanding. DST possesses a product lineup of cylinder modules for HiMSEN DF engines, and it is expected that related orders will increase significantly over the next one to two years.
DST has secured a production base capable of expanding annual sales to approximately KRW 100 billion and currently holds an order backlog of about KRW 57 billion. With the sales and growth momentum of the HD Hyundai Heavy Industries Engine & Machinery Division, a significant rebound in performance is anticipated in the second half of the year.
An Atom representative stated, "We aim to expand the supply of large transformers for ships through our subsidiary DST, and we plan to strengthen our group-level shipbuilding and defense power solution portfolio."
Meanwhile, according to market research firm VMR (Verified Market Reports), the market size for large marine transformers is estimated to be USD 2.5 billion (approximately KRW 3.48 trillion) in 2024. With an average annual growth rate of 6.3% from 2026 to 2033, it is expected to reach USD 4.1 billion (about KRW 5.7 trillion) by 2033.
