Gyeonggi Province will be accepting applications for project sites for the "Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED)" initiative from all 31 cities and counties within the province until September 30.
The Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design project analyzes the relationship between offenders, victims, and the environmental characteristics of crime locations to create crime-resistant spaces. This preventive design not only directly prevents crimes but also aims to reduce the fear of crime.
The project supports improvements in vulnerable environments by establishing infrastructure at selected sites, such as transparent fences, emergency bells and security closed-circuit televisions (CCTV) in alleyways, improvements to nighttime walkways, and the creation of community spaces.
Since 2023, Gyeonggi Province has been implementing the Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design project in two locations each year among the 31 cities and counties. Each selected site receives 500 million won, with a total project budget of 1 billion won (300 million won from the province and 700 million won from the cities and counties), to create a safer residential environment.
Kang Gilsun, Director of Architectural Policy at Gyeonggi Province, stated, "By actively promoting the urban environment design project, we will improve the quality of life for residents and create a safer residential environment in vulnerable areas through environmental improvements."
Meanwhile, Gyeonggi Province is currently formulating the "3rd Basic Plan for Crime Prevention Through Urban Environment" this year to establish a safer living environment from crime.
