On July 30, the city of Suncheon, South Jeolla Province, announced that it is actively promoting the 'Green Transformation of Aging Public Buildings' project to address climate change and lead in green architecture.
This project focuses on improving energy efficiency in aging senior centers, community health clinics, and national and public daycare centers that are over 10 years old, with the goal of creating a more comfortable and safer environment for children and the elderly.
The project targets a total of 39 sites, including 26 locations selected in last year's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport competition and 13 newly selected this year. Considering the recent nationwide heatwaves and the increase in heat-related illnesses, the remodeling of senior centers, which serve as cooling shelters for the elderly, is scheduled to resume after September.
A city official emphasized, "Through this green remodeling, we will transform aging public buildings into more comfortable and eco-friendly spaces, and do our utmost to create a public building environment where vulnerable groups such as the elderly and children can use these facilities with peace of mind."
