A Man in His 20s Arrested and Referred to Prosecution in Seosan, South Chungcheong Province
Charged with Violating the Welfare of Disabled Persons Act and Extortion
A man in his 20s has been arrested in Seosan, South Chungcheong Province, on charges of extorting tens of millions of won in basic livelihood support payments from his nephew, who has cerebral palsy and a physical disability.
On July 30, Seosan Police announced that they had arrested and referred to prosecution a man in his 20s, identified as A, on charges of violating the Welfare of Disabled Persons Act and extortion, for taking 35 million won in basic livelihood support payments from his nephew, B, who has a Grade 1 physical disability due to cerebral palsy.
According to police, starting from 2021 and continuing until recently, A had continuously taken his nephew's welfare payments.
The victim, B, is a person with a severe disability who has significant limitations in speech and movement, and it has been determined that he suffered long-term economic exploitation.
This case came to light following a report by the Chungnam Disability Rights Advocacy Agency. The agency stated that they received information that B was being continuously deprived of his support payments by his uncle and subsequently reported the case to the police.
After receiving the report, the police conducted an active investigation, including visiting the scene and securing statements from the victim, and arrested A approximately 20 days after the investigation began.
A police official stated, "A has been arrested and referred to prosecution on charges including violation of the Welfare of Disabled Persons Act."
