The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Tourism Organization announced on July 30 that they will operate the '2025 Workation Support Program'.
'Workation' is a compound word combining 'Work' and 'Vacation'. It refers to a work style in which employees perform their tasks remotely from locations outside the office while enjoying leisure time. The Korea Tourism Organization has established this Workation Support Program to invigorate local communities by promoting stay-type tourism.
The Workation Support Program will be implemented in 21 regions nationwide. Depending on the location and duration of stay, each participant can receive support ranging from a minimum of 30,000 won (for a 2-night, 3-day stay) to a maximum of 100,000 won (for a 4-night, 5-day stay).
Among the local governments operating the Workation Program, 15 are designated as areas with declining populations. In these regions, participants can also receive additional benefits through the Digital Tourism Resident Card. Furthermore, the program is linked with the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries' Fishing Village Experience and Recreation Workation, and the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs' Rural Workation Program, allowing workers to choose from a variety of options.
Any employee of a company or institution may participate. Those interested can apply through the official website of the Workation operator, 'The Holiday'. The Workation Support Program will run until December, but may close early if the funds are exhausted.
Lee Sangmin, Acting Head of the National Tourism Headquarters at the Korea Tourism Organization, stated, "The Korea Tourism Organization is making various efforts to spread the culture of workation in private companies, including collaborating with the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry to develop and promote customized programs for all member companies." He added, "We hope that this support program will contribute to the promotion of stay-type tourism and, furthermore, to the revitalization of local tourism."
