The Jeollanam-do Animal Hygiene Testing Institute announced on July 30 that, with the risk of food poisoning increasing during the summer, it will begin sampling inspections of edible egg handling businesses in the province from August 1 to September 30 to ensure that residents can consume eggs with peace of mind.
This inspection will target a total of 56 locations, including 20 egg sorting and packaging businesses and 36 collection and sales businesses. Following the inspections at the production stage, such as laying hen farms, which have been conducted from June to August, this inspection will focus on the distribution stage, immediately before the eggs reach consumers, to verify safety.
Eggs that are frequently purchased by consumers?such as large eggs, organic eggs, antibiotic-free eggs, animal welfare eggs, and first-laid eggs?will be prioritized for sampling. The inspections will thoroughly check for residues of 12 types of veterinary drugs and 31 types of pesticides, as well as contamination by food poisoning bacteria such as Salmonella, the presence of foreign substances, and any spoilage or decay.
If the inspection results show that eggs exceed the permissible residue limits, they will be immediately withdrawn from the market. The farms involved will be designated as 'residue violation farms' for six months and will face restrictions on the shipment or sale of eggs. For farms where Salmonella is detected, continuous inspections at two-week intervals will be conducted, along with investigations and guidance to improve management practices.
The purpose of this inspection is to prevent food poisoning incidents in advance and to ensure that only fresh and safe eggs reach consumers' tables. Going forward, the province plans to devote all efforts to protecting residents' health through thorough hygiene management and safety assurance of distributed eggs.
Jeong Jiyeong, Director of the Jeollanam-do Animal Hygiene Testing Institute, said, "Through this intensive sampling inspection, we will rigorously manage the hygiene and safety of eggs so that residents can consume eggs safely without worrying about food poisoning."
