Chinese Nationals Caught Taking Proxy Exams at Hansung and Inje Universities
Evidence Found of Coordination with Brokers on Smartphones
Chinese nationals attempting to take the Test of Proficiency in Korean (TOPIK) on behalf of others using forged Alien Registration Cards have been apprehended.
According to the police on July 29, a Chinese woman in her 30s, referred to as A, was caught during the 101st TOPIK held at Soongsil University in Dongjak-gu, Seoul, on July 13. She was detected when she presented a forged Alien Registration Card to the exam supervisor and was immediately arrested at the scene.
The police reportedly discovered evidence on A's smartphone indicating that she had coordinated with an exam broker to take the test on someone else's behalf.
The Test of Proficiency in Korean is an exam designed to assess and evaluate the Korean language skills of overseas Koreans and foreigners whose native language is not Korean. It is administered by the National Institute for International Education under the Ministry of Education and is used for purposes such as university admission, employment, and obtaining residence visas in Korea.
It has also been reported that Chinese nationals attempting to take the test using forged Alien Registration Cards were caught at Hansung University and Inje University. The forged Alien Registration Cards used by these individuals were shown to have been issued on the same date at the same regional immigration office.
The police are also investigating whether there is an organized group orchestrating these proxy test-taking schemes.
