This assessment was conducted for 286 public institutions nationwide, and among basic local governments, only two were selected as outstanding institutions. In Gyeonggi Province, Seongnam City was the only one to be recognized.
The "National Safety Education Status Assessment" has been conducted annually since 2019 in accordance with the "Framework Act on the Promotion of National Safety Education" to evaluate and strengthen the safety education capabilities of public institutions. This year's assessment was based on the safety education achievements of 2024 and evaluated central government agencies, metropolitan and basic local governments using 19 assessment indicators.
Seongnam City received consistently high marks in all categories, including △infrastructure development △cooperation systems △citizen engagement △education achievements △discovery of best practices.
In particular, the city received attention for the planning and execution capabilities of its hands-on safety education programs for children.
Representative examples include the "Children's Safety Experience Camp," which provided practical, daily life-centered safety education to 12,383 first and second graders from 71 elementary schools in the region, and the creative performance "Children's Safety Musical," which targeted 1,622 preschool children aged 5 to 7.
These programs maximized educational effectiveness through content tailored to children's perspectives and practice-oriented teaching methods. Based on high levels of citizen satisfaction and participation, they have been recognized as exemplary cases among basic local governments.
Shin Sang-jin, Mayor of Seongnam City, stated, "This assessment acknowledges the tangible results of safety education that citizens have directly participated in and experienced, rather than formal, administration-led training. We will continue to foster a warm and sustainable safety culture so that all generations can naturally learn about and enjoy safety in their daily lives."
